![]() There are lots of ways to run a reef tank. Some people also choose to dose Calcium and Alkalinity into the refugium section so if it gets isolated the levels in that chamber will go sky high while the display tank would get low. I have heard of refugiums that were cut off then without being fed nutrients from the main system died off a good bit, then when reconnected have a big nutrient dump on the display. It is commonly referred to as the open channel. If you were doing a bean animal design then there are need for Valves. ![]() But this will unbalance that overflow even more given the further path it needs to travel down the pipe. The second pipe acts very similar to a Durso because it is vented with an air hole preventing that pipe from being a siphon and making it quiet. In a dual overflow I can plumb one to go straight down and then plumb the other overflow across the sump. After reading a bunch of reviews, Im going to be plumbing my overflow Bean Animal style. So I have an custom aquariums over flow box drilled for 1.5 pipe 2400gph. The water coming down the drain line would also be a bit of a backup secondary feed to the fuge. Even if you still need to run a secondary pump (because you aren't getting the flow through rate in the fuge/frag tank), then you may be able to get away with using a smaller return pump. I think it is a bit of a waste of energy. I don't think there is a reason to have every tank connected to the sump drain directly into the sump.
